Crystal, who moved to 549 East Park Ave. in Long Beach with his family as a toddler, is working on the musical with the Nederlander Organization. The creative team includes Amanda Green and Jason Robert Brown as well as the co-screenwriters of the original film, Crystal, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel.

Crystal, who directed, co-wrote and starred in the original 1992 dramatic comedy, plays a stand-up comedian whose successes and downfalls stem from his refusal to play by anyone else’s rules.

"It's a great character and now I don't need the makeup!" Crystal told Variety regarding his role. "It's coming along very well. The funny is always there but the depth and the humanity is even stronger, based on what we learned from the reaction to the movie over the years."

A workshop for the musical is set to take place in May. For more information, click here.
